The Agn–starburst Connection, Galactic Superwinds, and M Bh − Σ
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent observations of young galaxies at redshifts z ∼ 3 have revealed simultaneous AGN and starburst activity, as well as galaxy–wide superwinds. I show that there is probably a close connection between these phenomena by extending an earlier treatment of the MBH−σ relation (King, 2003). As the black hole grows, an outflow drives a shell into the surrounding gas. This stalls after a dynamical time at a size determined by the hole’s current mass and thereafter grows on the Salpeter timescale. The gas trapped inside this bubble cools and forms stars and is recycled as accretion and outflow. The consequent high metallicity agrees with that commonly observed in AGN accretion. Once the hole reaches a critical mass this region attains a size such that the gas can no longer cool efficiently. The resulting energy–driven flow expels the remaining gas as a superwind, fixing both the MBH − σ relation and the total stellar bulge mass at values in good agreement with observation. Black hole growth thus produces starbursts and ultimately a superwind. Subject headings: accretion – quasars: general – galaxies: formation, nuclei – black hole physics

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملDetection of faint broad emission lines in type 2 AGN : III . On the M BH − σ ⋆ relation of type 2 AGN
Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass-host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGN. Here we present the locus of type 2 AGN having virial BH mass estimates in the MBH − σ⋆ plane. Our analysis...
متن کاملOn the Maximum Luminosity of Galaxies & Their Central Black Holes: Feedback from Momentum-driven Winds
We investigate large-scale galactic winds driven by momentum deposition. Momentum injection is provided by (1) radiation pressure produced by the continuum absorption and scattering of photons on dust grains and (2) supernovae (momentum injection by supernovae is important even if the supernovae energy is radiated away). Radiation can be produced by a starburst or AGN activity. We argue that mo...
متن کاملMid - infrared and optical spectroscopy of ultraluminous infrared galaxies : A comparison
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications – starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) – with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The a...
